Recently, the Seattle Police Department canceled their contract with a firm that analyzes body camera video footage. The contract had originally been renewed for two years in January. The company that was hired uses artificial intelligence to analyze body camera video and audio for cues and patterns to monitor officer behavior. It was considered a layer of transparency for the public at large. The cancellation came after privacy concerns were raised on behalf of the officers. Of course, the timing of the cancellation has folks up in arms because after an incident where an officer was caught on video and audio making some inappropriate comments after a civilian was killed by another officer. Due to the timing of the contract’s cancellation, there is sure to be a deep dive investigation into the truth of why it was canceled essentially a month after it had been renewed. Was it really because of privacy concerns? Or was there some other more nefarious reason?
