Untraceable “ghost guns” are illegal again. Why? Well because the U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay last week of a district court judgment that had invalidated the Biden Administration’s ban on untraceable firearms. The stay temporarily gave the rule new life, but the question is for how long because the legal challenge continues. What are “Ghost guns”? They are unserialized firearms. Some use parts made by 3D printers and readily-available plans, and others use production-grade parts sold by manufacturers as unfinished. In most cases, these parts are easy to put together and make an operable gun immediately. Untraceable guns can be sold without regard for state and federal laws, don’t require background checks, and skirt chain of custody issues. Many say this is a big problem. One that has lead to an increase in crime and fatalities.

In Washington state, manufacture of “ghost guns” with intent to sell them is a felony.
