Gun violence has been a lightning rod issue for many years now. As a consequence, the government has continually tried to figure out ways to stem violence caused by guns. Any time we at SQ Attorneys have a potential client see us about gun related charges, we have to emphasize how seriously the government views their case. In essence, the government takes a very hard line on gun related matters. The City of Seattle has focused one of its efforts to lessen gun violence on the storage and safe-keeping of firearms.

The gun storage law in Seattle requires that gun owners secure their firearms in containers that cannot easily be removed, opened, or otherwise defeated by the use of common tools. These security measures include gun cases, gun cabinets, safes, and lock boxes. The law also increases the penalties for any failure to report unsecured firearms that are lost, stolen, or improperly used by an unauthorized user. Gun owners who fail to comply with the law may be fined up to $500 if a firearm is not properly locked and/or secured. The fine increases to $1,000 if an “at-risk person,” a minor, or any other unauthorized person gains access to a firearm, and the fine shoots up (pun intended) to $10,000 if anyone uses an unsecured firearm to commit a crime or to injure someone.

A conviction for a firearms offense can negatively impact one’s future and freedom. If you or a loved one is cited for a crime (gun related or otherwise) don’t despair, contact a qualified criminal defense firm.
