Can My Actions Make Things Worse?

Earlier this month a woman in Bellevue was arrested for DUI. That fact alone isn’t too news worthy. What is news worthy, however, is that the woman ended up grabbing a hatchet from her car. She did this after she ran her car into two other vehicles and got into a confrontation with a witness to the accidents. The witness noticed the woman had wine-stained lips and appeared to be slurring her speech. The witness got into a scuffle with the woman over her keys, and this is when the woman grabbed a hatchet. Officers ultimately arrived on scene and detained the woman. She wasn’t done with her challenging behavior though, as she was uncooperative and allegedly attempted to escape by taking her cuffs off.

Needless to say, this woman was unceremoniously booked into jail. What are the lessons to be learned from this incident? Well, let’s see. First, obviously one should not elect to drive after consuming too much alcohol and/or drugs. Second, if one does elect to drive after consuming too much, he/she should avoid: (1) getting into an accident, (2) arguing with witnesses, (3) pulling out a weapon, (4) being difficult with officers and (5) surreptitiously taking off handcuffs without permission. None of these decisions and/or actions will help a DUI attorney effectively negotiate a positive outcome for their client. Why?  Because officers, prosecutors, and judges don’t take kindly to this type of behavior. In short, if you drink and drive, be smart, don’t make things worse for yourself – like the woman in this Bellevue incident.
