As most folks know, Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated annually around the world on March 17th. The holiday celebrates the most commonly-recognized patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461). The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It celebrates the heritage and the culture of the Irish in general, and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which of course has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of abundant alcohol consumption worldwide.
