The ‘best laid plans …’ is a proverb usually said when something ends poorly despite a person’s best efforts to prepare for success. It is an abbreviated version of the full proverb “the best-laid plans of mice and men oft go astray,” and it is certainly applicable to a recent fraud scheme that took place in the State of Florida. The fraud happened when a Florida woman had the grand idea to keep cashing her mother’s disability checks even though her mother was no longer alive. She literally put her mother’s body on ice. The plan quickly unraveled when the government did a welfare check and found the 93 year old woman’s body stuffed in a freezer chest. Needless to say, the ill-conceived plan resulted in the elderly woman’s daughter being charged with failing to report the death of her mother and tampering with evidence. The act clearly worked out to be the ‘worst laid plan’ and did in fact … ‘go astray’. Perhaps the proverb this woman should have followed is ‘it is better to be safe than sorry’ … just sayin’.
