Why the Crackdown??

A few recent incidents signify why the government is so hell-bent on continuing to crack down on DUI’s in Washington State.

First, a Clark County Deputy Sheriff was hurt this past weekend after driving directly into the path of an intoxicated driver on northbound Interstate 5.  The Deputy’s intent was to stop the motorist from going the wrong way.  Unfortunately, the two cars hit head-on, and they came to rest on the interstate.  The deputy was injured and was rushed to the hospital.  The intoxicated driver was arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUI.  Undoubtedly he will face charges filed by the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office.

Second, in Snohomish County, there was a family tragedy, when a 56 year old man was killed by an intoxicated driver.  This was the second DUI related death for the family.  15 years prior the 56 year old man’s son was killed by a DUI driver, he was only 20 years old.  Sadly, both father and son lost their lives in separate DUI related incidents.

The driver in the latest incident was arrested for Vehicular Homicide He’s accused of going through a red light before crashing into the 56 year old’s pickup truck. To make matters worse, he is accused of running from the crash scene. Monday bail was set at $100,000.

The driver who caused the man’s son’s death 20 years ago was given 3.5 years in prison.  Similar to the Clark County incident, the woman had been driving in the wrong lane (for miles), she had no auto insurance, and her BAC sadly tested at more than twice the legal limit.

Upon reflection, it is not – per se (no pun intended) – surprising that Washington State continues to crack down on DUI’s.  So … as we have said in the past … if you or a loved one has been arrested for a DUI related incident, you should immediately contact a Seattle DUI defense attorney. A qualified and respected Seattle DUI lawyer, among other things, can quite possibly save the aggrieved person thousands of dollars in court and insurance fees, the extent of loss of privilege to drive, and the amount of jail time to be served. We have said it before and will say it again, Washington DUI laws are far too complicated for any ol’ attorney to handle. Be smart and consult with a qualified and skilled Seattle DUI attorney when arrested for an alcohol and/or drug related DUI in Washington State. SQ Attorneys is here to help – (206) 441-1600.
